Born in the '80s. Child of the '90s.
Hi, I'm Jeff!
I grew up in the suburbs north of New York City during the 80s and 90s. In 2002, I headed to Long Island to attend college, where I met my wife (peeking over her shoulder for "help" during a test). I sort of never left "the island" after that, but after spending nearly twenty years there, we moved to New Hampshire for a little more space and the opportunity to live up to the state motto.
Reflecting on those college days when I met my wife (she's brilliant and beautiful!), it all seems so long ago. My whole childhood does, to be honest. These days, I'm excited to watch our child grow and create those special memories she'll cherish, just as I did. I'm also happy to have someone else to share my "old" memories with!
I truly loved my childhood, and these days, I put a lot of effort into helping my child create a similar, unforgettable childhood of her own.
I was born in the mid-80s, so technically, I'm a millennial, but I prefer the term Centennial. Gen Z apparently stole that name, so now the 'official' word is Xennial, which mixes Gen X and Millennial.
Whatever the name, we were the last group before the digital age. The final "free-range" generation before the world became tied to the internet, social media, and constant contact. I can remember life before living "online" and coming of age during the transition to our current digital world. As my generation grew up, we witnessed so much change in the world that it's no wonder many of us enjoy reminiscing about "the good old days" and what seemed like a "better time."
After many years of reading nostalgia blogs, I entered an essay contest in 2019 on what I consider one of the internet's best nostalgia sites, The Retro Network. I'd never written anything before, but I submitted an article about the toys made from the 1990 Dick Tracy film.
I enjoyed writing it so much that I decided, win or lose, I would continue writing, and with that, YesterYear Retro was born on October 9, 2019.
I won that essay contest, and I'm proud to say that some of my writing appears on The Retro Network. You'll find most of my work here, but I occasionally appear on The Retro Network and other platforms.
YesterYear and my writings have been mentioned in places such as Sports Illustrated, SitcomsOnline, Buzzfeed, Yahoo Lifestyle, and more. If you had read this write-up, you'd also know that even a major television network ripped off my work! You'll also see my work published in places like The Retro Network, RetroJazz, PopCurrentcy, AeroNews, This Nostalgia Life, and others!
Here at YesterYear, I try to offer informative written tributes to what made my childhood so great. Most of my articles combine personal memories with a more informative "book report" on a topic. Through my writing, I aim to provide written documentation of people, places, and things from times gone by, serving as a memory jogger for my readers.
I love getting emails from readers who tell me, "I had totally forgotten about this!" or "I never knew that happened!" An even bigger treat for me is when a reader emails a question about something from their childhood, and I help them 'spark' a long-lost memory!
Enjoy the site and the road trip down memory lane!
