About

Born in the '80s.  Child of the '90s.

Hi, I'm Jeff!

I grew up in the suburbs north of New York City during the 80s and 90s, and around the turn of the century, I headed to college on Long Island.  There, I met my beautiful and brilliant wife (while peeking over her shoulder for "help" during a test), and pretty much never left 'the island' after that... until a few years ago when we moved north for more space and the chance to live up to our state's motto about "Freedom."

Reflecting on those college days, it all feels so long ago.  As a matter of fact, my whole childhood does.  Honestly, it feels like a different world.

These days, I'm thrilled to watch our child grow and create the kind of special memories I still cherish.  It's wonderful having someone new to share my "old" stories with!

I was born in the mid-80s, so I'm technically a Millennial, but I'm certainly more of an Xennial, that cusp between Gen X and Millennial.  We were the last generation to experience life mostly offline, coming of age right as the digital world took over.  Witness to much change in our world, it's no wonder so many of us love reminiscing about the "good old days."

After years of reading nostalgia blogs, I entered (and won!) an essay contest in 2019 on The Retro Network with a piece about 1990 Dick Tracy toys.  I loved writing it so much that I kept on going, and YesterYear Retro was born on October 9, 2019.

I'm proud that some of my articles appear on The Retro Network, but you'll find most of my work right here.  YesterYear has been mentioned in Sports Illustrated, BuzzFeed, Yahoo Lifestyle, SitcomsOnline, and more (yes, even a major TV network once borrowed from my work without crediting me!).

Here, I write tributes to the people, places, and things that made my childhood unforgettable, blending personal memories with my own version of a "book report" research.  My goal is to jog the readers' memories or spark "I totally forgot about that!" moments.  Nothing beats an email from someone saying I helped them rediscover a long-lost memory.

Enjoy the site and the trip down memory lane!
