About

Born in the '80s.  Child of the '90s.

Hi!  I'm Jeff.  I grew up in the suburbs just north of New York City and attended college on Long Island.  After college, I never left and wound up spending nearly 20 years "on the island."  A few years back, my family and I moved to New Hampshire for a little more space and the opportunity to live up to the state motto.

I'm married to a brilliant and beautiful woman I met in college.  Those college days seem like just yesterday, yet they seem so long ago.  I'm excited to watch our child grow and develop memories she'll create for herself, just as I did.

At the very least, I'm happy to have someone else to share my "old" memories with!

I was born in 1984, so technically, I'm a millennial, but I don't like that term. I prefer "Centennial," but it seems Gen Z stole that name, so now the word is "Xennials," mixing Gen X and Millenial.  Whatever the name, we were the last group before the digital age.  Xennials were the final "free-range" generation before the world became tied to the internet, social media, and constant contact.

I can remember life before living "online" and came of age during the transition to our current world.  As my generation grew, we witnessed so much change in the world; it's no wonder many of us enjoy reminiscing about "the good old days" and wish we could return to what we consider a better time.

I truly loved my childhood, and these days, I spend a lot of energy and time thinking about how to create a similar, unforgettable childhood for my own child.

After many years of reading nostalgia blogs, I entered an essay contest in 2019 on what I consider one of the internet's best, The Retro Network.

I had never written anything before, but after submitting my article on the line of toys based on the 1990 Dick Tracy film, I decided that win or lose, I would continue writing on my own.

With that, YesterYear Retro was born on October 9, 2019.

I won that essay contest, and I'm proud to say that some of my writing appears on The Retro Network.  You'll find most of my work here, but occasionally, I'll pop up on The Retro Network and elsewhere.

YesterYear has been mentioned in places like Sports Illustrated, SitcomsOnline, Buzzfeed, Yahoo Lifestyle, and more!  If you had read my article about YesterYear's 5th Anniversary, you'd also know that a major television network even ripped off my work!

My articles have been published in places like The Retro Network, RetroJazz, PopCurrentcy, AeroNews, This Nostalgia Life, and others!

Here at YesterYear, I try to offer informative written tributes to what made my childhood so great.  Most of my articles contain a mix of personal memories and a more informative "book report" on a topic.  Through my writing, I aim to provide written documentation of people, places, and things from times gone by and serve as a memory jogger for yourself!

I love getting emails from readers who tell me, "I had totally forgotten about this!" or "I never knew that happened!"  An even bigger treat for me is when a reader emails a question about something from their childhood, and I help them 'spark' a long-lost memory!

Enjoy the site and the road trip down memory lane!
