Retro RePost: Why Are Halloween Pumpkins Called Jack-O-Lanterns?

It's that time of year again.  The pumpkins have been carved, painted, and set out on the front steps.  They've also been assaulted by the chipmunks and squirrels looking for a snack!  

This always brings me to "why on earth do they have the name Jack-O-Lanterns?  

The good news is that I've written about this in the past, and I'm here to share it again!  I myself needed to re-read my article so that I could correctly answer my daughter when she asked just the other day.
