Retro RePost: The Summer of 1997's Tamagotchi Toy Craze

Back in 2024, I posted this fun trip down memory lane about the absolute madness of Tamagotchi virtual pets during the summer of 1997.

As our summer-Friday RePost of the week, I'm throwing this one up there because those little pixelated eggs still bring a smile when I think about them... even if most of our "pets" met an untimely digital demise from neglect.

That summer, it felt like every kid had one clipped to their backpack or shoved into a pocket.  My neighbor got the real deal first and rubbed it in every chance he got, so of course, I begged Mom until I scored a bright orange knockoff dinosaur version at a random checkout counter.

I named him Reptar (after the Rugrats dino, naturally) and carried him everywhere... for a while.  It was the perfect portable companion for those long summer days before we were all glued to our phones 24 hours a day.  I even took him on our family vacation to Maine… until swimming, boating, and general summer fun made me forget about him for a bit. RIP Reptar.

Do you remember the Tamagotchi craze? Did you have the real Bandai one, a knockoff, or were you one of the lucky ones whose parents caved right away? Drop your stories in the comments — did yours live a long, happy virtual life or suffer the same fate as mine?
