Retro RePost: TV Land Turns 30!

On April 29, 1996, based on the wild success of Nick-at-Nite, the evening programming block on Nickelodeon, Viacom sparked a wave of nostalgia for baby boomers when it launched a dedicated 24-hour channel called TV Land.

TV Land aimed to go further than Nick-at-Nite by offering a broader mix of genres, including westerns, dramas, variety shows, and crime/cop offerings that didn't fit the family-friendly sitcom mold of its predeceessor.  With clever "retromercials" that echoed vintage ads and the priomise to make older shows feel young again, it quickly became a haven for fans cracing the golden age of television.

Originally written in July 2020 as the capstone to my "Nick at Nite" tribute week, I'd like to ask you all this week to go ahead and reread this article about TV Land as we honor the 35th anniversary of this once-great channel.

This channel that once aired classics like MASH and Green Acres pivoted toward younger demographics in the mid-2000s with original programming like Hot in Cleveland and other series backfilled from VH1 and other Viacom/Paramount networks.
